Well, the deed is done! We moved our youngest into the dorm for his Freshman year of college yesterday! And honestly…it couldn’t have gone better! He Had a small window of opportunity to get to the Office of Residential Life- 1PM – 1:30PM- to get his student ID and his room key. Turned out, that was because, even though he was moving in early, there were LOTS of students moving in early!
We decided to “divide and conquer”. We needed to pick up the room key and we needed to run by the Target store in Davenport, Iowa, where he is going to school, and pick up a dorm fridge. (Long story for another day!) So, at noon, he drove HIS car, loaded with a lot of his stuff and the rolling hand cart we own, and headed for the university to pick up the room key and ID, Meanwhile, we left at the same time, loaded with the rest of his stuff, and headed for the Davenport, Iowa Target store!
By 1PM, he was standing in the Office of Residential Life, waiting tp pick up his stuff. Meanwhile, we were standing at the Target Customer Service counter, waiting to pick up the fridge! By 1:25PM, we were ALL at the dorm (he was ahead of us by about 15 minutes) and by 3:20PM, we were A. completely unloaded AND unpacked in his 5th floor dorm room! By 3:30PM< we were walking to the car to get some food and make a run to Walmart for a few things we needed. (You KNEW that was going to happen!) By 5:05PM, we were back at the dorm, saying our goodbyes in the parking lot. And by 6PM…I was in MY chair in the living room, enjoying a little “kick back”!
If you were keeping score at home, we A. drove to another state, B. picked up a dorm fridge at Target and keys at the university, C. unloaded everything from 2 vehicles, D. unpacked everything and put it all away, E. ate dinner, F. ran to Walmart, G. ran back to the university, H. said goodbye and I. drove home…ALL in 6 hours! (And the drive time alone is about 1 hour and 35 minutes!) Pretty amazing!
His dorm room is…a dorm room. (Although he DOES have a semi-private bathroom that is only shared with one other room, a sink IN the room AND a thermostat just for his room! Although the AC did NOT seem to be on yet!) But it will be a perfectly comfortable place to spend the next 9 months. He starts his new campus job- Career Center Ambassador- this morning. And he starts class next week.
Was it bittersweet to drop the younger off at college? Yep! But we are SO excited for him and can’t wait to see what God has in store for him. (I am convinced he is absolutely going to eat college for BREAKFAST! But then…I readily admit I am partial!) I pray for everybody who is going back to school this fall. I pray for faculties and staffs at schools across the country. And I pray that God would continue to empower this newest generation of future leaders to do a BETTER job than we have!
